ARTIST STATEMENT

My encaustic and mixed media paintings are nature-based abstractions exploring the elegant interconnectivity of all living things. Using encaustic, oils, cold wax, collage, I merge abstract and representational elements. Plants, animals, trees, birds have long served as symbols and archetypes in the human imagination. My creative work strives to share the concept of Biophilia, the innate human love of nature, as described by biologist E.O. Wilson. “The significance of biophilia in human biology is profound…it is relevant to our thinking about nature, about the landscape, the arts, and mythopoeia, and it invites us to take a new look at environmental ethics.” (Wilson, 1993) Using a varied process with media, technique and subject matter, there's a range of themes and iconography in my work. I seek a poetic middle ground, where elements and references become abstract, whisper suggestions, and transition into a mysterious realm: nuanced, intriguing, unknown.

ARTIST BIO
Alison grew up in an outdoorsy, nature-loving family in Calgary, Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. After traveling around the world, she earned a BFA in Painting and Drawing in Canada and then moved to the United States. She earned an MA in Art Therapy/Art Education and worked in outdoor education and as an art therapist, before teaching art for twenty years at a leading college preparatory school in New Mexico. She especially loved leading students on multi-day wilderness art making trips in the desert Southwest. She has a deep appreciation for the transformative and healing power of both nature and art.
Alison left teaching in 2021, moving to southern Utah where she lived by Zion National Park, making art and exploring the red rock canyons. She was the Artist in Residence at Zion National Park in the Fall of 2023.

Alison recently returned to New Mexico and lives in Santa Fe where she has her studio. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in galleries and museums, and is in private collections across the United States and Canada.
