ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings are nature-based abstractions celebrating the dynamic interconnectivity of all living things. It intrigues me to see my work manifest as a series over time where an underlying alchemical process is revealed. I see a through-line of propensities, repetitions, patterns, and meaning, a kind of spiralling return and way-finding through images and process. For me, art making involves a persistent eternal return.
I’m intrigued with the realm between abstraction and representation, where, much like a dream coming through the veil, organic forms emerge and mingle with line, shape, color, space. I employ various processes and techniques in encaustic, oils, cold wax, drawing, and collage.
I'm particularly drawn to botanicals and other symbols and archetypes that resonate in the human imagination. My art is a dynamic poetic journey where elements and references become abstract, whisper suggestions, and transition into a mysterious realm: nuanced, intriguing, unknown.
ARTIST BIO
Alison's Art Studio is located at the Second Street Studios in Santa Fe, and she’s employed as a Senior Educator for the Wonders on Wheels Mobile Museum, part of New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. She was the Artist in Residence in Zion National Park in the Fall of 2023, and lived in southern Utah exploring the red rock canyons.
For twenty years Alison taught Drawing and Painting and Advanced Placement Art at the leading college preparatory school, Albuquerque Academy. She also led students on multi-day wilderness art-making trips in the desert Southwest. Alison has a deep appreciation for the transformative and healing power of both nature and art.
Alison grew up in an outdoorsy, nature-loving family in Calgary, Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies. After extensive world travel, she earned a BFA in Painting and Drawing in Canada, and an MA in Art Therapy in the United States. She has worked as an art therapist, an outdoor experiential educator, and an art educator. Alison’s work has been in group and solo exhibitions in galleries and museums, and is in private collections across the United States and Canada.
